The tournament reached a new height this year as the invited players were soe of the most famous players in the world. The incomperable Grandmaster Vassily Ivanchuk made his Edmonton International debut. His biggest challenger was the Philippino (now American) Grandmaster Wesley So, who at the time of the tournament surpassed the legendary Ukrainian on the rating list.
The two super-stars battled it out until the end for tournament supremacy, but despite taking the early lead, Wesley was not able to keep the momentum as he was stopped by Edmonton FM Vladimir Pechenkin. In the end Vassily took 1st with 8/9 ahead of Wesley So. Third place was shared by top Canadian GM, Anton Kovalyov and a member of the US Olympic team-GM Samuel Shankland
Albertans were over-matched in this event, but IM Richard Wang finished with a respectable 4/9.
Despite some tough competition, other Albertans managed to score some important points, as Alex Yam gained his first GM scalp over the US Women's Champion, GM Irina Krush, while FM Vladimir Pechenkin earned a very deserved halp point against GM Wesley So.
