In the 8th edition for the first time the defending champion made a return, as Grandmaster Nigel Short came back to defend his title. Unfortunately, early on it became evident that his title defense wasn't going to be simple as he scored only one win with two defeats and a draw in his first four rounds. While Nigel recovered enough to finish second, the slow start meant that the title wasn't going to be his this time around.
The award went in an undisputed fashion to Grandmaster Lazaro Bruzon who finished the tournament with seven wins and two draws.
Third place was shared by two Albertans as IM Richard Wang and GM Eric Hansen both scored 14 points in the three point system.
